The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You", reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the student’s development & appreciation to other person's point of view and also show consideration towards other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is a good doctrine in this motto, which underlines on the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.
The symbol of National service scheme, as appearing on the cover is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of konark sun temple potray the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the sun chariot wheel, primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies on the part of the NSS for continuous striving forward for social transformation and upliftment.
The NSS symbol is embossed on NSS Badge. NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking various community programmes of community service. There are 24 wheels in 'Rath' of sun temple of Konark. Each wheel has eight bars, which represents 8 pahars of day. Hence the badge reminds the wearer to be in readyness for service of the nation round the clock i.e. lively, active and spirited.
