About NSS:

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. NSS (National Service Scheme) activity is one of the primary activities for social services and learning importance at the very young stage while students are graduating.

Objectives of NSS

The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are:

  • Understand the community in which they work
  • Understand themselves in relation to their community
  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • Utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  • Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  • Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters
  • Practice national integration and social harmony

Motto of NSS

The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You", reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the student’s development & appreciation to other person's point of view and also show consideration towards other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is a good doctrine in this motto, which underlines on the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

NSS SYMBOL

The symbol of National service scheme, as appearing on the cover is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of konark sun temple potray the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the sun chariot wheel, primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies on the part of the NSS for continuous striving forward for social transformation and upliftment.

NSS BADGE

The NSS symbol is embossed on NSS Badge. NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking various community programmes of community service. There are 24 wheels in 'Rath' of sun temple of Konark. Each wheel has eight bars, which represents 8 pahars of day. Hence the badge reminds the wearer to be in readyness for service of the nation round the clock i.e. lively, active and spirited. The Navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny party ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

DUTIES OF NSS VOLUNTEERS

  • To establish rapport with the people in the project area;
  • Identify needs, problems and resources of the community;
  • Planning and implementation of the programmes.
  • Relate his learning and experience towards finding solutions to the problems identified.

NSS JSSATEB

NSS unit in JSS Academy of Technical Education, Bengaluru is active since the inception of this institution. NSS unit of JSSATEB has conducted many social services namely Swatch Bharath Abhiyan, Blood Donation Camp, Preparation and Plantation of seed-balls, Special camp, Health checkup camp and Walkathon to raise awareness about drugs etc.
