The Department is Headed by Dr. M Vijay Kumar
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management was established in the year 1997, with a intake of 60 and is currently headed by Dr. M Vijay Kumar. Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) program is a blend of Mechanical Engineering and Management. The department imparts education in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management to the students through its well established Undergraduate, Post Graduate in MEM & PDM (2010-2017) and Research programmes. A Research Centre under Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, offers M.Sc. Engineering by Research and Ph.D. programs. The department has laboratory facilities with modern equipment that help in carrying out research in the areas related to Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
From the Desk of HOD
The department has 12 faculty members of which 5 are Ph.D.,awardees and the remaining are pursuing Ph.D. The student-faculty ratio is 18:1. The faculty are actively involved in research work. From our Research Centre 5 doctoral degrees have been awarded, one MSc Engineering by research and 21 research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. Faculty members are actively involved in publishing research papers in various National /International Journals and Conferences. The department regularly organizes student development programs, faculty development programs, conferences and workshops. A continuous interaction with industries is established through MOUs, industry visits and internships.
The department has membership with professional societies like QCFI, IIIE and SAE and conducts various technical activities. We encourage our students to involve and participate in technical club activities. Recently our aeromodelling club KNIGHT HAWKS participated in BOEING AERO DESIGN competition held at IIT Kharagpur and won the best design report award. And our formula car team TACHYON participated in FFS 2017 held at Coimbatore, Tamilnadu in October 2017. The students are consistently getting ranks in university exams. They are encouraged to participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The training and placement division provides soft skills training and placement assistance to students. Several research and development projects in niche areas have been successfully executed by the department with support from various funding agencies such as DST and AICTE. Department of Industrial Engineering and Management An Overview
Keeping in step with the needs of the business world, the curriculum focus has switched over from traditional business practices to current managerial practices. This course develops the knowledge and skills in the areas of Mechanical Engineering basics, Industrial Engineering, Functional areas of management, Information Systems, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management, Quality Management and Quantitative approaches to decision making apart from basic engineering knowledge and skills with emphasis on overall personality development. This branch of engineering produces generalist engineers who can serve in industrial, service and research organizational set-ups. . The department has on its rolls, qualified and experienced teaching faculty with specialization in Industrial Engineering, Industrial management, Reliability Engineering, and Manufacturing Management, Production Engineering and highly skilled, self motivated technical staff. The state of the art infrastructure has been established in order to promote a congenial academic environment to impart quality education. The faculty members are actively involved in consultancy assignments, Research and also conduct training programmes for students, faculty of other institutions and industrial executives in the core area of competence.
The department houses research center recognized by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and enables aspirants to actively engage in research pursuits in the contemporary area of Industrial Engineering and Management. Several research and development projects in the niche areas have been successfully executed by the department with the support from various funding agencies such as DST, AICTE. DST alone has sponsored projects worth 2.25 crores. The spin-offs of the projects are of high relevance to the industry and society. The department has also conducted training programs on skill development of DIST and DIC (Government of Karnataka).
The faculty members are holding honorary positions in professional societies like Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering (IIIE), Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM). This provides an opportunity for faculty members to continuously interact with Professionals.
The department strives for open and interactive academic environment with state of the art Class Rooms and Laboratories. The faculty and students are continuously exposed to the latest and emerging trends in their field of study. The students are encouraged to seek internships and projects between successive semesters in order to gain a better understanding of the industrial environment. The final year students are encouraged to take up live projects in the manufacturing service and research organizations in order to acclimatize themselves to the organizational set up. The expert interventions will enable the students to relate class room discussion with the industrial practices. The industrial experts, eminent academicians have lauded the work carried out by the students of the department as a part of the curriculum.
The students graduating in the discipline of IEM have opportunities in various sectors of business and economy including Manufacturing, Automotive, Garments and Textile Industry, Retail, Information Technology, Services, Defense and Consulting. Presently IEM graduates are placed in reputed Multinational and Indian organizations including: CTS, Tech Mahindra, L & T InfoTech, Wipro, TVS Motors, Capgemini, Quest Global services,Arvind Exports,Itsy Bytsy to name a few. Our Alumni are doing extremely well in the supply chain Division of Wipro, Volvo, Cooper standard India, Wallmart etc.
The department has its own library facility having more than 1000 titles.
